Stuart Binny ready to don the all rounder’s role

The upcoming tour of West Indies is bound to pose some serious challenges for the touring Indian party. With the unpredictable nature of the Caribbean surfaces coming into the fray, it will be extremely important to find the right team balance.  The ideal balance between the batting and bowling departments will pretty much sum up the success of the tour for the vibrant outfit led by Virat Kohli.

While discussing the team balance, the role of Stuart Binny comes under the scanner. The all-rounder has been around the test setup for quite a while now, as he made his debut a couple of years ago in Nottingham. After a mediocre debut series, Binny was surprisingly recalled to the test side against Sri Lanka in 2015, after the Indians lost the first test. Coming into the side, Binny didn’t rake up impressive figures, but his contributions were far vital.

In the second test at Colombo, Binny got rid of a well set Angelo Mathews, which triggered a Sri Lankan collapse, handing India the advantage. Then in the third test, Binny chipped in with a crucial knock of 49, and in a low-scoring game, that was an impactful innings indeed. Thereby, Binny knows his way about and in conditions which assist his bowling, having him in the side could be a rather good move.

From the domestic front as well, the Karnataka all-rounder has batted at number 6, and has been quite successful. If Virat Kohli decides to go for an all out aggressive strategy, Binny would be in the mix for sure. His bowling can be relied upon when the frontline seamers need a break before a new burst.

“I have never been asked to change my game, even when batting at No. 6. It’s also important that we score runs; just not hang around in Test cricket, Binny said about his batting in tests. “I feel sometimes in Test cricket, it is a bit easier because they start to attack you a little more than the other formats. No. 6 is a crucial spot, it depends on the role. Sometimes I might have to play with the second new ball. That’s what I have been doing in the last week – to bat against the new ball.”

A noticeable aspect behind Binny’s recall has been that now he looks quite fit and lean as compared to a couple of years ago. “It was a choice that I had to make, especially if I wanted to play,” Binny said. “Being leaner and stronger helped my bowling. The reason I fit into teams is because I can bowl and not because of my batting. For me, bowling was crucial and I had to get fit for more opportunities and at a higher grade. It took me two years to get into the condition right now. You get IPL along the way and you do not get time to train because you travel. But that is no excuse. It is a lot of sacrifices but good ones.”

“I looked after my diet. That helped me 65-70%. It is about eating at the right time and five good meals. You need to balance and eat good protein. I did a lot of running in the first year. Now, Shankar Basu has brought in power training in the last few months. That has helped a lot of guys to bowl well in the second, third spell. That is what training is about. All this has ensured I’m now able to be as effective in my second and third spells,” all rounder added.
