Stuart Broad feels Joe Root will excel in the Ashes

England pacer Stuart Broad feels that Joe Root would be an essential factor for England as they prepare to retain the trophy. He backs the right-handed batsman and is confident that Joe Root will come out good during the Ashes which gets Underway from next Thursday.

However, Joe Root had a poor time on the pitch the last time he featured in the Ashes. He could only manage an average of 27.42 in 4 tests before being dropped from the final one. Root himself would also be hoping to shine with the bat this time around and help his team retain the urn.

Broad was quoted in omnisport as saying:

“He is the best player I have played with. He is the most natural mover, the rhythm of his batting is just wonderful to watch and Australian pitches are made for him”

“Let’s not forget the last time he went there he ended up getting dropped for the last game.”

“Very rarely does a top-flight sportsman go through a career without a slightly low moment that kicks them off to another level. That was Joe’s low moment in Australia and I think this tour is where he kicks off to another level again.”

Both the teams have not been at their best for quite a long time as far as batting is concerned, and according to Broad Steve Smith, Joe Root, David Warner and Alastair Cook are the players to watch out for.

The fast bowler also admitted that a fiery Aussie bowling attack would target Joe Root, but at the same time, he believes that the 26-year-old is capable enough to take care of the attack.

“Probably the four key batsmen in the series are Cook, Root, Warner and Smith from both sides – very consistent performers and both bowling units will be looking at those guys as big wickets”

“There were questions when Joe took over the captaincy, ‘is it the right decision because we don’t want to lose his runs?’

“But he gets 180 in his first game. That’s the kind of guy he is, he loves the responsibility, top-flight performers do.

“The Aussies will target him, yes. Is he good enough to withstand this? Of course.”
