ToggleAce England bowler Stuart Broad credited the experience of getting hit for six sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh for toughening him up for the long run. Broad, England’s second highest Test wicket-taker announced his retirement from the game at the age of 37.
The fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test against Australia is underway at the Oval, where Broad surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from the sport.
In 167 Test matches for England throughout the course of a career that started in Sri Lanka in 2007, the tall bowler from Nottinghamshire will have claimed more than 600 victims. After James Anderson, he has taken the second-most wickets for England, and he is the only pacer to surpass 600 wickets in a Test match.
He also participated in 121 ODIs, taking 178 wickets, and 56 T20Is, picking 65. Broad was a member of the England side that won the T20 World Cup in 2010.
I Didn’t Have Any Focus: Stuart Broad On That Over Where He Was Hit For Six Sixes By Yuvraj Singh
Broad may only be remembered for one thing, despite his notoriety and records: he was the first bowler in T20I history to be hit for six sixes in a single over. Yuvraj Singh had hit Broad for six consecutive maximums during a match in the 2007 T20 World Cup; the over, which is still talked about today, rightfully went down in history.
Stuart Broad addressed media after his retirement announcement and couldn’t escape this question about Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes off him.
“Yeah, it was obviously a pretty tough day, what would I have been, 21, 22? I learnt a lot, I pretty much based a whole mental routine through that experience, knowing that I was left very short as an international performer. I’d rushed my preparation, I didn’t have any pre-ball routine, I didn’t have any focus.
I started building my ‘warrior mode’ that I call it after that experience. Ultimately, I wish that didn’t happen. What really helped me that it was a dead rubber, so I didn’t feel like I’d knocked us out of the World Cup. But I think it steeled me up to make me the competitor I am to this day, and has driven me forward a huge amount,” Broad said.
