India breached Australia’s Gabba fortress to seal a stunning win on Day 5 and seal the series 2-1. Rishabh Pant hit a heroic unbeaten 89, Cheteshwar Pujara did his job with a solid fifty and opener Shubman Gill hit a brave 91 as India gunned down the highest successful chase — 328 in Brisbane.
India galloped to a record 328-run chase at the Gabba, becoming the first team since the West Indies in 1988 to beat Australia at their Brisbane stronghold despite missing key players to injury. The likes of Virat Kohli, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah were not there but Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur and T Natarajan rose to the occasion delivering commendable performances.
India had difficulty to field even an XI in the 4th Test but the net bowlers T Natarajan, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar who were asked to stay back after the conclusion of limited-overs series made up for the loss.
India Retains Border Gavaskar Trophy As They Complete Hat-trick Of Wins Against Australia
Without a single first-choice bowler in Brisbane, India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, two years after beating Australia in the 2018-19 series Down Under, and also shot to the top of the World Test Championship. The result has the potential to end Tim Paine’s reign as Australia captain, now having lost back-to-back home series against India.
Rishabh Pant, who played a career-defining knock of unbeaten 89, became the fastest Indian wicketkeeper to reach the 1000-run mark. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 56 off 224 balls stood still before the Australian attack and posted his slowest fifty. His 50 came in 196 balls. He had hit his last 50 in 174 balls in Sydney’s drawn Test.
The Aussies were on a 7-match winning streak at The Gabba heading into this Test against the Indian cricket team. Their streak has ended with the loss to India. The first Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between the Indian cricket team and Australia happened in 1996. With the win in Brisbane, the Indian cricket team has now achieved a unique hat-trick. They had defeated the Aussies in India in 2017 and have now won the last two series Down Under.
