Sunil Gavaskar Brings Up India-Pakistan Match As An Example To Conduct IPL After Coronovirus Pandemic
The Coronavirus pandemic has affected sporting events around the world. The spread of the virus has led the cricketing boards to find the solutions for hosting the matches. Also, the Indian Premier League (IPL), the most-watched T20 league by fans, was around the corner while the BCCI has decided to postpone the league to mid-April. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said that playing in front of the empty stadium is a better option.
The former cricketer opined that there has been an incident in India’s cricketing history when the team has played in front of an empty stadium. He gave the example of an India-Pakistan Test match of Asian Test Championship being played in front of empty stands in February 1999. Thus, he expressed that there is no harm to play IPL with no spectators.
“There is one example of an India-Pakistan match played in front of empty stands in Eden gardens Kolkata after Sachin (Tendulkar) got run out and there was unrest in the crowd. I think the game was stopped on that particular day but the next day it was continued in front of empty stands. So there is a precedent as far Indian cricket is concerned,” said Gavaskar.
“So clearly if it has to happen then it can happen. Whatever it is the best for everyone that has to be taken into account. And if it’s best for everyone to play in front of empty stands, so be it,” said Gavaskar.
“As long as it is not risky for players, the support staff, broadcasters, camera persons the tournament can go on and play in front of empty stands is not a problem.”
IPL cancellation can put huge impact
Meanwhile, If reports are believed, the BCCI will have to face the loss of 10,000 crores if the league gets cancelled.
