Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) confirmed their retentions ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, and Australian opener, David Warner, wasn’t one of them. Although it was along expected lines, it was a rather poor way for the two parties to separate.
The much-publicized feud between David Warner and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finally came to an end. The eight existing franchisees involved in the IPL announced their retention list. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) management opted to retain Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik, much to the surprise of the cricketing fraternity.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Doesn’t Retain 2021 T20I WC Player Of Tournament David Warner For IPL 2022 Mega Auctions
Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner has confirmed he has been released by the franchise despite his stellar campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021, where he bagged the Player of the Tournament award for 289 runs in seven matches for Australia. IPL 2021 has been the Australian’s worst season ever with just 195 runs in 8 games, with two fifties, averaging 24.38, and striking at 107.73.
As the IPL 2021 season resumed in UAE, the Aussie opener featured in the first two games for SRH but aggregated just 2 runs. Leg Spinner Rashid Khan was expected to be the top choice, but SRH was adamant about offering Kane Williamson the biggest contract. While the failure to keep Rashid Khan was a surprise, the most successful batsman of the franchise – David Warner, was also not retained and the 34-year-old took to Instagram to thank the fans.
“Chapter closed!! Thanks to all of the fans @srhfansofficial @sunrisersfansofficial for your support over all the years, it was was much appreciated. #fans #loyal.”
David Warner was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2014 IPL auction for USD 880,000. The very next year, he was appointed as the captain. In the 2016 IPL, he led them to their second trophy, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the final.
David Warner Is The Only Batsman To Win The Orange Cap Thrice
Along with AB de Villiers, David Warner is one of the most successful overseas players in the history of the IPL. To date, he is the only batsman to win the Orange Cap three times. In just 95 innings for SRH, David Warner amassed 4014 runs at a brilliant average of 49.56 and an excellent strike rate of 142.59.
David Warner is still the only player to win the IPL Orange Cap three times, and with SRH on all occasions. He even led SRH to an IPL title in 2016 and holds the record for the second-most runs in a single edition of the IPL (848 in 2017) after Virat Kohli’s 873 runs in 2016. He has been Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) star opener for a number of years, having carried the weight of a fragile middle order single-handedly. He was the Orange Cap winner in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
He is still the IPL’s 5th highest scorer, having amassed 5449 runs in 150 games averaging 41.59 with 4 tons and 50 fifties. He has hit the maximum number of the fifties in IPL history. David Warner led SRH to their maiden IPL title in 2016 as they defeated Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by eight runs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad has let go of a majority of their overseas stars before IPL Auction 2022. New Zealand all format skipper batsman Kane Williamson is the only foreigner retained by Hyderabad.
Other retained players-Abdul Samad, has played 23 IPL matches managing 222 runs besides picking 2 scalps, while pacer Umran Malik has played only 3 IPL games picking 2 scalps.
