Sunrisers Hyderabad overcame a mini-collapse to register their second win of the season with a thrilling 1 5-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.
Chasing a modest 148, Shikhar Dhawan and Wriddhiman Saha laid the platform for an easy chase with a 62-run stand. The stand was broken when Mayank Markande accounted for Saha. His dismissal turned the match on its head as Mumbai clawed their way back by taking two more quick wickets. From 62 for 0, they found themselves reeling at 77 for 3. More importantly, they lost Dhawan and Kane Williamson.
Markande then took his third wicket, dismissing Manish Pandey to reduce Mumbai to 89 for 4. They soon found themselves five down with just 107 runs on the board. But before the visitors could make further inroads in the game, Deepak Hooda and Yusuf Pathan stitched together a 29-run stand to all but seal the game. Jasprit Bumrah broke the partnership by dismissing Pathan. At that time, the hosts needed 12 off 14 balls. But on the very next ball, Bumrah dismissed Rashid Khan to throw the game wide open.
In the following over, Mustafizur Rahman conceded just 1 runs and took the wicket of Siddharth Kaul off his four balls to put Mumbai on top. One ball later, the Bangladesh star sent back Sandeep Sharma, leaving the hosts requiring 11 off the final over with one wicket in hand.
Hooda started the last over on a perfect note, hitting Ben Cutting for a maximum. The following delivery was a wide which brought the equation to 4 off 5. The game went right down to the wire as Sunrisers won the contest on the last ball.
Earlier in the game, the Sunrisers came up with another solid bowling display to restrict Mumbai Indians to a modest 147 for 8.
The visitors were off to a poor start once again as Rohit Sharma departed for just 11 courtesy of a brilliant diving catch from Shakib Al Hasan. Evin Lewis and Ishan Kishan then steadied the ship by adding 37 runs. However, Siddharth Kaul dismissed both of them in quick succession to put the hosts on top.
Mumbai soon found themselves in further trouble when Krunal Pandya failed to get going too. As a result, they found themselves reeling at 72 for 4 inside 9 overs. At the end of 10 overs, the scoreboard was reading 78 for 4. The quick wickets helped the home side to tighten things as Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav struggled to score at a good pace. They kept on losing wickets at regular intervals which never allowed their innings to get the impetus. As a result, they ended up with a below-par score.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the innings:
I guess you get used to the tension if you are an @mipaltan fan!

SRH trying so hard to get to the super over so they can see Rohit bat again. Insane mega stardom.

It's a pity one team has to win this contest, both teams deserve to lose this at the moment. #IPL

Talent meets opportunity. Mayank Markande has grabbed it with both hands. Story of the season for @mipaltan so far. Also, Credit to the scouts and the team management for playing him upfront. #SRHvMI

SRH should be sent to South Africa.

24 needed off 4 overs and the match is getting close. But one person could come in and finish it off in just 4 balls. That’s the power of Vinay Kumar.

If Mumbai Indians lose, Mukesh Ambani should reduce Jio speed of Rohit Sharma to 128kbps. No mercy

Rashid Khan 1/13 from 4 overs. Tantalising spin bowling, leaving batsmen in Hamlet-like existential dilemma, to be or not to be…

Mumbai Indians, why hurry. Take time. Fear Rashid could derail them if he gets through Pollard.

Helpful reminder that Rashid Khan is still a teenager (19 years 204 days) #Ripleys #IPL

Bhuvi missing but Sid Kaul has quite nicely stepped up. Three wickets in the power-play overs is BIG. Too many shots too much early for #MI #SRHvMI

Siddharth Kaul stepping up in absence of Bhuvi. Two huge wickets that too inside Powerplay, captain dream of such bowlers.

How well did SRH do at the auction this year. Lost their best batsman Warner before the season began and don't have their best bowler Bhuvi today. Still looks like an extremely well balanced team today. #IPL

Uh oh, that was quick surrender by @ImRo45 after getting a life. Mumbai under early pressure losing their best batsman and captain
