Supreme Court’s Tough Stand On BCCI, Board Unlikely To Announce Names For A Three-Member Committee

The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) seems in no hurry to figure out the three-member committee which is likely to replace the current administrators of the Indian cricket governing body (BCCI) after Supreme Court of India reserved their verdict on Thursday.

The former Union Home Secretary GK Pillai, who has been appointed as the head of the observation committee to look after the recommendations suggested by the Justice RM Lodha Committee, was openly opposed by the BCCI.

BCCI supremo Anurag Thakur was charged by the apex body during the hearing for committing perjury.

“Why are you trying to mislead the court? If you want to escape perjury charges, you ought to apologise. At every stage you have been trying to obstruct. Everyone wants to go around and continue to hold the post even after 70 years. This is such a lucrative business that everyone wants to go on forever,” said the bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur.

However, Thakur denied the allegations on swearing and while asking for a letter from the International Cricket Council (ICC), Chief Executive Officer Dave Richardson, who stated the appointment would breach board’s autonomy over the amount of interference of government.

“Freedom of expression allows you to disagree with the order but you can’t obstruct implementation of the order. Once we pronounce the order (in perjury proceedings), you will have no other place to go except jail,” the court said.

After the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal was unearthed, the BCCI had opposed several reforms recommended by Justice RM Lodha Panel in the past.

“If we agree to name three probables to be included in the committee it will mean we have accepted the Panel’s recommendations,” a top official responded while asking whether the BCCI would give out the names to the Supreme Court, quoted as saying by mid-day.

Sportzwiki learnt the amicus curiae Gopal Subramanium had suggested the name of former Indian selector and cricketer Mohinder Amarnath including former CAG chief Vinod Rai as two of the members of the committee.

On December 13, the board’s request for seeking a review of the July 18 verdict was dismissed by the Supreme Court. The court had directed the BCCI to implement the recommendations suggested by the Justice RM Lodha committee.

Earlier, the hearing was adjourned to December 9 which was scheduled for December 5, and later deferred to December 15, following Justice TS Thakur’s health concerns.
