Why Suresh Raina got picked into ODI squad ahead of Yuvraj Singh?
One of the major surprises in the ODI squad for the New Zealand series was the inclusion of Suresh Raina ahead of proven match-winner Yuvraj Singh.
The Gujarat Lions captain had failed miserably when called upon to the Indian T20 squad earlier this year as he more or less became a burden on the team with a series of poor performances that continued until the end of World Cup.
Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh who was called at the same time to the Indian squad has made the most of the opportunity as he has excelled with both bat and ball when needed and played a role to hold the innings together in T20 World Cup as openers Rohit, Dhawan and Raina failed miserably throughout the tournament.
However, Raina was picked ahead of Yuvraj Singh for the ODI series and is set to make a comeback to the Indian team despite his poor performances in the recent times.
The 29-year old has played well in Indian Premier League like every other year but has failed to replicate the same form and runs in the Indian jersey off late.
One of the main reasons for the inclusion for Raina is MS Dhoni’s confidence in the left-hander as the pair has played for Chennai Super Kings over eight years and Dhoni is known to back the players on the basis of their performances in Indian Premier League on occasions. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Dhoni has backed Raina this time as this has been a case for the past few years despite the 29-year old looking clueless on many occasions.
The 34-year old southpaw has played a series of great knocks last year in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy to make a comeback to T20 squad but with his participation, in IPL was affected with an injury. He has since been overlooked once again despite his valuable contributions coming down the order for the Sun Risers Hyderabad.
All in all, Dhoni and selection panel feels Raina could be a part of 2019 World Cup more than Yuvraj Singh as they decided to give the 29-year old nod ahead for the upcoming ODI series which is set to be a crucial test for him.
