Raina’s participation in the pre-seaosn tournament is seen as a move by him to be fit for the upcoming season. It is to be noted that he played just three domestic games in the last season, which saw him dropped from the BCCI central contract list. He was though selected in India’s T20I squad for the home series against England failed to make it to the squad for Champions Trophy and tour to Sri Lanka and Windies. The reports also suggested that he failed yo-yo test in NCA a few days ago and participation in this tournament is seen as a move to keep himself fit.
With team India set to play a long home season again, there is a chance for Raina to make a comeback to the team, if he performs in the domestic season. Apart from Raina, UP side has the likes of Praveen Kumar as well. This is also a chance for him to get some match practice ahead of the domestic season.

The side is set to miss out on the services of Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Both of them are the members of the Indian team for Sri Lanka series. In fact, there can be a case when these two might skip the whole domestic season due to international commitments.
Meanwhile, the host state i.e. Tamil Nadu announced three squads for the tournament. Players like Abhinav Mukund and Murali Vijay have not been included in any of the sides.
