One of the most fighting characters in world cricket, Gautam Gambhir celebrated his 36th birthday today, and the whole cricketing fraternity took to their social networking sites to flourish birthday wishes to the southpaw. Out of favour Indian batsman, Suresh Raina also took to his twitter handle to wish Gambhir a very happy birthday. “Your optimistic spirit always encourages others! Your drive and determination are admirable! Have a terrific Birthday @GautamGambhir,” Raina said.

Both Gambhir and Raina are not in the national scheme of things, and they will be hopeful of making a comeback for the national team before they eventually retire from the international scene. While Raina can still force his way back into the team, the return of Gautam Gambhir to the Indian squad seems kinda bleak given the fact that he is already 36 years old.

Gambhir is among those players who are known to produce his best game when the situation demands the most. The southpaw played two of the greatest innings in the history of Indian during two most important days in Indian cricket history. The southpaw scored a match-winning 75 against Pakistan in the 2007 World Twenty20 final which proved crucial in India lifting the inaugural World Cup.
The stylish left-handed batsman played the most important innings of his life on 2nd April 2011, on the night of the World Cup Final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India was chasing a stiff target of 275 to lift the World Cup after 28 years against Sri Lanka and had lost the two crucial wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar without much contribution.

From there on Gambhir took charge and in the company of Virat Kohli, the duo started rebuilding. Then after the fall of Kohli’s wicket, it was MS Dhoni and Gambhir who continued the good work. Gambhir was eventually dismissed three runs short of a well deserved century, but by then he had taken India within touching distance of the target.
