South Africa fast-bowler Morne Morkel played his last international game on Tuesday (April 3). The right-arm pacer enjoyed a stellar career which spanned over a decade during which he took more than 300 wickets.
He played his first Test match for South Africa on 26 December 2006. The 33-year old is a part of an elite club of players to get more than 300 wickets for the Proteas. He donned the Test cap for the final time in the fourth Test at the Wanderers against Australia. And he could not have asked for a better finish to his career.
Morkel played a crucial role in the game, helping the hosts to victory as South Africa beat Australia in a Test series on home soil for the first time since 1970.
Speaking after the match, Morkel said he would miss playing the game.
“A lot of guys say they don’t miss the game, but I’m definitely going to miss it. “Not one day did I not enjoy coming to the nets and warm-ups. I enjoyed everything. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t going to miss it. I still have a love of the game,” he said.
Meanwhile, the cricketing fraternity was quick to pay tribute to the cricketer. And India star Suresh Raina also followed suit. The southpaw took to Twitter to write a heartfelt message for the retiring star.
“A perfect send-off for a man who deserved every bit of it. Congratulations, @mornemorkel65, on a career greater in height than you. Wishing you tons of luck for your second innings. ?✌️”
