Surrey sign England discard Kevi Pietersen for FL T20 competition
County championship side Surrey has confirmed that Kevin Pietersen will play for Surrey this summer.
The 33-year-old was recently sacked by the ECB in the aftermath of the dismal tour of Australia, as cricket’s custodians claimed he couldn’t be trusted to give his full support to captain Alastair Cook.
The South African-born batsman, though, is now busy finalsing his schedule for the summer, as he agreed to represent Surrey in the domestic Twenty20 competition after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League.
Pietersen has played for Surrey since 2010 campaign but his future in England had been unclear after his deal with the Oval based county expired at the end of last season.
Surrey have now confirmed Pietersen will play in NatWest T20 Blast’s all 14 matches, while the flashy batsman has also hinted he could also feature for the side in the County Championship.
Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart says he is delighted to be able to call on Pietersen for the 2014 season, claiming they had to fight off competition from plenty of interested parties.
Stewart said: “We are delighted to have agreed terms with Kevin, and to have a player of his ability at the Kia Oval.
Unsurprisingly there was a great deal of interest in Kevin from around the world, but he has made it very clear that he wants to play at Surrey and it is not only good news for the club but for the domestic game in this country. We are now looking forward to watching him in the middle, scoring a bucket load of runs for Surrey,” Stewart concluded.
