T Natarajan successful debut against Australia puts pacer Mohammed Shami under pressure to keep his place in T20Is as per Sanjay Manjrekar. T Natarajan debuted in both ODI and T20I against Australia in 2020. He was added as a cover in ODIs for Navdeep Saini after the latter complained of back spasms.
T Natarajan debuted in the 3rd and final ODI which India won by 13 runs after successfully defending 302. He picked 2 wickets in ODI debut but was a bit expensive conceding 70 runs in 10 overs. He picked up Marnus Labuschagne and Ashton Agar’s wickets.
T Natarajan Has Put Mohammed Shami Under Pressure As T20I Bowler: Sanjay Manjrekar
In the first T20I, India won again by 11 runs, and T Natarajan successfully debuted in T20Is too picking 3 scalps in 4 overs conceding 30 runs. He picked D Arcy Short, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc’s wickets.
“What he has done is he has put Mohammed Shami under pressure as a T20I bowler. Now India will be really tempted to have him along with Bumrah as one of his seamers.”‘
“This is a guy who can bowl at the death. If you have Bumrah and Natarajan, it just puts pressure on Shami because Chahar is from a different school of swing,” Sanjay Manjrekar said on Sony Six after India’s win in the T20I series opener.
T Natarajan came from nowhere and wasn’t named even in the T20I squad. He was initially among 4 reserve bowlers but a shoulder injury to uncapped spinner Varun Chakravarthy saw him bag a place in T20I. Sanjay Manjrekar reckons T Natarajan’s spectacular bowling success has put likes of pacer Mohammed Shami under pressure to perform and keep his place in T20Is.
T Natarajan Came Out Of Nowhere: Sanjay Manjrekar
Ahead of first ODI, he was added as cover to Navdeep Saini after the latter complained of back spasms. He bowled in 3rd ODI after Navdeep Saini went for plenty of runs in first 2 ODIs. Navdeep Saini conceded 83 runs in first ODI besides picking a wicket and 70 runs in 7 overs in 2nd ODI.
“It’s a great story purely because this is a guy who has come out of nowhere. Today, by playing his first T20I and bowling so well there was a wicket he took off a length ball of Maxwell. He is not a bowler who will get you wickets only with the yorkers when the batsmen are trying to slog you.”
“I just find him amazing. A couple of years ago, who would have thought? He would not have imagined himself in his wildest dreams that he would be challenging the big boys for a place in the Indian team,” Manjrekar said.
T Natarajan is often hailed as yorker specialist for the reputation to bowl yorkers accurately. He picked 16 wickets from as many games after impressing in IPL 2020 playing for SunRisers Hyderabad. He played in 6 games in his debut IPL season and picked up 2 wickets for Kings XI Punjab. He hails from Salem and played tennis ball cricket and impressed in Tamil Nadu Premier League.
