Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh opener, announced his retirement from T20 Internationals at the conclusion of the ODI series against the West Indies on Saturday (July 16).

The batter had not T20Is for Bangladesh since the middle of last year and hence there was speculation about his future in the format. Tamim Iqbal had last played a T20I in March 2020 and in that game, he scored 41 off 33 balls against Zimbabwe.

His last T20I was against Zimbabwe in 2020, after which he missed the rest of the three-match series due to a knee injury. He also voluntarily pulled out of the tournament of last year’s 2021 T20I World Cup.

“Please consider me retired from T20Is from today. Thank you everyone,” Tamim wrote in Bangla.

Tamim Iqbal, on January 27, took a six-month break from T20Is, though he played a domestic T20 tournament during this period.

Earlier, the ODI skipper stated that he would clear his position regarding his T20I future before the six-month deadline ended after confusion surrounding it. The Bangladesh batter played 78 T20Is and scored 1758 runs at an average of 24.08 and a strike rate of 117.2 that included one century and seven fifties.

He is the only batter for Bangladesh to have registered a T20I century and he finishes as the third highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in the format at an average of 24.65. In his T20I career, the opener scored one century and seven fifties. The veteran batter has also scored 5082 runs in Tests and 7943 runs in ODIs.

The Bangladesh ODI skipper reckoned his team isn’t fully ready for the 50-over 2023 World Cup to be played in India next year. On Saturday, July 16, the Tigers defeated the West Indies 3-0 in the three-match ODI series. Bangladesh won the third and final ODI at the Providence Stadium by four wickets.

After the series triumph, Tamim Iqbal stated that he was delighted about the fact that Bangladesh won back-to-back overseas ODI series. Earlier this year, the Tigers defeated South Africa 2-1. After defeating the West Indies, Bangladesh is set to tour Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series.
