Virat Kohli & Co. are looking set for a major overall as the Committee of Administrators (CoA) have reportedly made up its mind on hiking the players’ salaries.
The India skipper along with his predecessor MS Dhoni and head coach Ravi Shastri had recently met with the Supreme Court-appointed CoA to discuss the players’ salaries following which CoA head Vinod Rai had said that the meeting was fruitful.
The players’ contract is due for renewal since September with reports suggesting that the cricketers are not happy with their remuneration. According to the last annual contract, the Grade A players were paid INR 2 Crore per annum while Grade B and C cricketers received INR 1 Crore and INR 50 Lakh respectively. The figures is quite low when compared with what the Australians and the British cricketers earn.
However, the amount is now going to take a huge leap according to Bangalore Mirror. As per the news outlet, cricketers with the Grade A contracts could be paid around Rs 12 crore a year, with the captain’s salary even higher. The Grade B players’ contracts could be worth around Rs 8 crore, and Grade C contracts could fetch around Rs 4 crore a year.
“The discussions went on for more than four hours and focused on the disparity in wage structures between Indian, British, and Australian players. There is no doubt the marquee Indian players are grossly underpaid compared to their British and Australian counterparts,” a CoA source was quoted as saying by the news outlet.
“The effort will be to restore parity,” A source added.
The report further claimed that sources in the know of things have stated that no agreement has been reached so far but it was unanimously agreed that the Indian players deserved to be on par with the rest of the world regarding contracts.
The domestic players are also set to enjoy a hike in their salaries as the authorities have shown a willingness to make the players’ career stable.
“The career span of a domestic cricketer is not very long these days. All of them are not highly educated and jobs are scarce. It is essential they are compensated adequately,” the source said.
