Team India Retain Batting And Fielding Coach Until ICC Champions Trophy 2017

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have retained the services of the batting and fielding coach for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England. The contract of batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar had officially expired in March and the parties were scheduled to discuss on the next course of action in June. However, both the coaches have been told to extend their services for the upcoming tournament which will take place in England from June 1 to June 18 and a call on their future would be taken only after the conclusion of the tournament. The only change in the team’s support staff is that Kapil Malhotra will replace Anil Patel as the team manager.

“It is decided that the support staff will remain the same at the Champions Trophy with the only change being Kapil Malhotra taking over as manager. Bangar and Sridhar have been asked to extend their services for the duration of the tournament and then it will be decided what needs to be done,” BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Both Sridhar and especially Bangar have done a phenomenal job since joining the team in 2014. The fielding standard of the Indian team has gone up by leaps and bounds in recent times although the recent months have been an exception where the Indian fielders had been really poor with the catching. But the batting has been top-class in the last few months or so and that has played a big part in India’s rise to pinnacle of Test cricket.

The Indian batsmen had struggled against the spinners during Duncan Fletcher’s tenure as team India coach. The batsmen were using a wider stance under Fletcher. But the trend has completely changed under Bangar who advised the batsmen to adapt a narrower stance. Results started coming fast as India thoroughly dominated the recently-concluded home series where they won 10 of the 13 Tests while losing just once.

“A lot of batsmen have gone back to narrower stance purely because mobility is a crucial aspect in batsmanship. That is a crucial factor and we being Indians using feet has always been our strength and going over the top and not being afraid lofting the spinners. We are always sending the message to spinners that we are coming at you has always been a strength of Indian batsmanship, over a number of years,” Bangar had said in that regard back in February.
