In India, where people are enjoying a spin show from R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, on the other side of the globe at Benoni, Temba Bavuma has just smashed a century on his ODI debut. The sad thing is that there was no telecast of the game; hence, no one could watch his classic innings. Temba Bavuma, who has played 11 Test matches till now, was given a chance to open the innings for South Africa on his debut in absence of regular opener Hashim Amla and he grabbed the opportunity with both the hands by smashing a century.
Bevuma was informed about his debut 3 days before the game. It looked like he prepared himself well before the judgement day.
Bavuma is the second South African batsmen and 12th batsmen overall to achieve this record. Colin Ingram was first South African batsman to do so.
Bavuma opened the innings along newly married boy Quinton De Kock. Both started off well sharing 159 runs for the first wicket before De Kock was dismissed on a score of 82 missing the ton by a margin of 18 runs. However, Bavuma was unaffected by it and went onto to score a century with a boundary off Kevin O’ Brien. He was dismissed on a score of 113 as he was caught by captain William Porterfield off Craig Young.
Sadly, this is the first and only ODI of Ireland series and Bavuma now has to return home as he has not been selected in ODI squad against Australia. Though there is still a ray of hope for him as South African captain AB Dev Villiers is injured and needs to prove his fitness before the Australian ODI’s. In case if AB De Villiers is not able to recover, then Bavuma may walk in the team replacing him.
