Test Cricket Needs This Push: Sourav Ganguly On India-Bangladesh Day-Night Test
India and Bangladesh will make their pink-ball debut next month as the two teams will play a day-night Test at Eden Garden, Kolkata. Two weeks back, there was no plan to host a pink-ball Test and the sudden progress was only possible with Sourav Ganguly taking over as BCCI’s President last week.
He consulted India skipper Virat Kohli, who agreed to play the historic Test. Kohli hasn’t played any competitive match with a pink ball but few of the members have played with it in Duleep Trophy.
Lack of crowds in the stands during Test matches would have been one of the reasons behind BCCI doing the things in a hurry. Commenting on the historic Test after Bangladesh accepted BCCI’s offer, Ganguly said that Test cricket needed this push.
“It’s a good development. Test cricket needs this push. Me and my team were bent on it and thanks to Virat (Kohli) also, he agreed,” he told the Press Trust of India.
Eden Gardens hosting the Test will be a perfect tribute to the pink-ball Test as it became the first venue in India to a pink-ball game back in 2016. Later, BCCI organised the Duleep Trophy with a pink ball for the first time.
While few of the Indian players have played with a pink ball, BCB has organised only one match with it so far. The board did consult the players before taking a decision and they agreed to it.
The day-night Test will be a historic occasion for many reasons as the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh are likely to attend the first day of the Test. All the players who played Bangladesh’s first-ever Test are also likely to attend the occasion.
Former India captains might also grace the occasion. Though nothing has been confirmed regarding this.
The pink-ball Test of the series will be played from November 22 to 26. The first Test will be played in Indore from November 14 to 18. Before Tests, the two teams will also play three T20Is starting November 3.
