Test Rishabh Pant In Different Conditions, Don’t Be Too Fussy: Saba Karim
Former national selector, Saba Karim, who was himself a wicketkeeper-batsman has warned the cricket fraternity against creating so much noise about the rise of Rishabh Pant, as former selector feels that Pant still has a long way to go and have to prove himself in different and challenging conditions, “After so many days we have got a young talent like him, but I think that we should give some more time to Rishabh. Selectors should first see him performing in different conditions. Team India is always in search of a player who can keep wickets and bat as well, yes, he is doing well but its only his first year and he has to prove himself in long run,” says the former selector.
Rishabh Pant has amassed a total of 799 runs this season with a total of 4 centuries to his name, which also includes a triple century against Maharashtra. Pant has already received praise from many legendary players including Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh. The way he is moving forward is really mind boggling as he is tumbling and breaking records on daily basis. He posses a batting average of 114.14 this season and his batting strike rate is 113.01 which is enough to blow anyone’s mind.
Though Saba feels Pant needs to be tested in different conditions but he himself knows that Pant is in the form of his life and can be a go-to replacement in case of a regular wicketkeeper getting injured or unavailable as he says, “In any case if there is an immediate requirement of a player in the squad, he can be the replacement. This is where the bench strength comes into play. Ishan Kishan and Ankush Bains are also playing well and this is a good signal for Indian cricket.”
Surely this is a good signal for Indian cricket but Ankush Bain’s name in his list is a bit of surprising. Though Bains performed well in U-19 World Cup 2014 but he has never been consistent in domestic cricket. In this year’s Ranji Trophy, Bains has scored 318 runs in 11 innings at an average of 28.90. Despite an average show in the last season as well, he was given a chance in historic Pink ball Duleep trophy to play for India Red but there as well he just scored 36 runs in the lone game he played.
He has been there with M.S. Dhoni in CSK and RSP camp since the year 2015. This can probably be the reason why Saba Karim has named him?
Talking of Ishan, he failed badly in the Under 19 world cup but yes it was under his guidance team reached the final of the U19 World Cup 2016. In this years Raji Trophy, Kishan has scored 599 runs in 9 innings which includes three centuries, out of which one was converted into double ton against Delhi. Surely, he is a good prospect to watch in future. He was a part of Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016.
