Tharanga, Chandimal Named Sri Lanka Skippers For Tests And Limited-Overs Respectively Following Mathews’ Resignation
Following the unexpected resignation of former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan Board (SLC) have named Dinesh Chandimal and Upul Tharanga as the Test and the limited overs captain respectively with immediate effect.
While Chandimal has been Mathew’s deputy in T20I’s earlier and has also captained the national team; Tharanga, on the other hand, has captained the ODI team in the recent past whenever Mathews have been injured.
Sri Lanka lost the recent five-match bilateral series to minnows Zimbabwe which prompted Mathews to take this decision. He sat with the chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya to decide the future of Sri Lankan cricket, an SLC official said.
“He has quit the captaincy from all three forms of the game,” the official said. The 3-2 series loss has been the lowest point in his career according to Matthews and he made it pretty clear in the press conference. “It’s one of the lowest points in my career and a hard one to swallow.
“Everything went against us, from the toss to misreading the wicket. But there are no excuses. At the end of the day, we were not good enough to beat them. They played better cricket.”
Sri Lanka has played some exceptional brand of cricket under Mathews especially in the longest format but since the 2015 World Cup, the Islanders have performed well below par in limited overs cricket.
Meanwhile, Chandimal lauded Mathews for his contribution to Sri Lankan cricket as a captain and hoped to have him by his side especially in the coming few months as Sri Lanka is bound to face some stern challenges in the coming few months.
“I’m very thankful for the job that Angie [Mathews] has done for us,” he said. “Captaincy is not an easy job. He’s a match-winner for us, and I have huge hopes that he will continue to be one in the coming years as well,” Mathews was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
Sri Lanka’s most notable achievements under Mathews has been winning the Test series in England in 2014 and brushing aside the Aussies by a 3-0 margin last year. Prior to that series Sri Lanka had only won a solitary Test against the Aussies.
