Virat Kohli, the Indian captain, has been made to bear the heat from the fans and media after the resignation of Anil Kumble. The letter that followed the resignation announcement created a huge debate over Kohli’s attitude as the former coach cited untenable relationship with the Indian captain as the reason behind his departure.
Also, since then, everyone is also eagerly waiting to hear Kohli’s side as well to conclude whether who was responsible for the spat. Kohli hasn’t spoken much about it but he has a handful supporters who have backed in this tricky time.
The latest to emerge is former Australian skipper Ian Chappell. He disagrees with the fact that a skipper cannot make the final decision related to the team.
“The captain is the only person who can run an International cricket team properly because so much of the job involves on-field decision making. Also, a good part of the leadership role –performed off the field – has to be handled by the captain, as it helps him earn the players’ respect, which is crucial to a skipper’s success,” he opined in his column for Hindustan times.
Extending his support to Kohli, he explained that it is better to not have someone with a similar nature to that of the skipper as it can brew confrontations.
“To put someone of a similar mindset in a position where he’s advising the captain is inviting confrontation. The captain’s best advisors are his vice-captain, a clear thinking wicketkeeper and one or two senior players. They are out on the field and can best judge the mood of the game and what advice should be offered to the captain and at the appropriate time,” he added.
Team India is currently in the Caribbean to play a limited overs series featuring 5 ODIs and 3 T20Is against West Indies. The unit currently does not have a coach with them and only the support staff headed by the batting coach Sanjay Bangar is present.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has invited fresh applications for the role of head coach after been left unsatisfied with the names who applied following the first advertisement for the role.
