The Story
Indian Women team’s performance in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in England has opened the floodgates for launching swift developmental initiatives. Women’s cricket has been lacking the exposure among the mainstream cricket fans historically.
But, ever since the culmination of the 2017 mega event in London, where Team India finished as the runners-up, the outlook has changed entirely.
Stars Expect more Domestic Cricket
Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur feels the best way forward to strengthen the women’s cricket structure in the country is to include more domestic matches in the calendar.
“Earlier, there were not many matches for us at domestic level but I think the BCCI is working on it and we would definitely get good quality of games,” said Harmanpreet Kaur.
She was at the inauguration of teammate Punam Raut’s academy in Kandivli on Saturday. Harmanpreet Kaur was at her attacking best in the semi-finals against Australia, playing a magnificent inning of 171 not out off just 115 balls. Her enormous efforts saw India cruise to the finals without much fuss.
“The comparison between men’s and women’s cricket is over. I think now everybody wants to watch cricket be it men’s or women’s. I think it’s a great achievement for us. Now there is more responsibility on us.
“We will carry that momentum and keep performing,” Harmanpreet said.
Punam Raut, the right-handed opener, also agreed with Harmanpreet and backed BCCI’s plan for an India A tour.
“Of course, the initiative by BCCI with regards to India A tour for women is good. More and more girls should come up. We get less number of series to play, but there is a lot of talent coming up, and it will be an opportunity to express themselves when they play for India A. It is a good initiative,” she said.
