The nine nightmares of Curtly Ambrose : an over of 17 deliveries
The pacer who believed in talking less off the field and answering with his performance, Curtly Ambrose is surely one of the finest of his time. With numerous successful spells and records after his name, Ambrose has also got another weird record. Let’s have a look.
It was his last test in Australian soil, and co-incidentally it was his last over. The match was in Perth, which itself is quite ‘popular’ for its pitch. His over started with a single run but the misery started afterwards. First, he went on delivering 2 consecutive no balls and the next one dot. But the next array of four balls were all declared as no balls again. Much to Curtly’s respite the next ball was a legal delivery though it bore 3 runs with it but what happened next?
Later in an interview, when asked of this disastrous spell, Curtly said, “I honestly don’t know. It does not make sense. It was one of those days I just don’t know what happened. I kept going over the mark. I tried everything. I used all my experience. I slowed down my run-up. I bowled with a little shorter run-up. Still I went over. To this very day I still don’t know what the problem was. It was the only time in my career it happened. Some people said it was the Fremantle Doctor. I said no, I have played in Perth many times. It was one of those freakish moments I could not do anything about.”
