The Stuff Virat Kohli Did With Steven Smith Was Unacceptable, Says Ian Healy
Several former Australian cricketers have expressed their unhappiness over Virat Kohli and his captaincy attitude in the ongoing second Test at Bengaluru. The Test series has been dominated by the visitors so far and a sort of frustration has been quite visible in actions of Virat Kohli. The Australians have clearly got under the skin of the hosts. After securing a stunning win at Pune, they have continued to show mettle by challenging the might of the in-form home side greatly.
The resilience shown was obviously not expected by Kohli & Co, who clearly look under pressure. The Indians were quite animated on Day 2. Steven Smith and Kohli were involved in several heated verbal clashes. Things turned bit funny when Ishant Sharma was involved in an unique facial mocking of Steve Smith and Matt Renshaw.
Michael Clarke suggested it was a clear attempt from Kohli to unsettle his Australian counterpart following the home team’s unexpected struggles early in the four-Test series.
“Virat (has decided) … we’re not going to sit here and allow Steve Smith to play his game. I want to try and stir him up and get something out of the Australian captain.”
However, Ian Healy reckons it’s a sign that Kohli is starting to crack under pressure.
“The pressure is starting to tell on him, I’m losing respect for him,” Healy told SEN Breakfast on Monday.
“He’s not only continuing his disrespect of the Australian players and umpires, but I think he’s putting pressure on his own players now.”
Healy said Kohli’s actions are unacceptable now that he’s the captain.
“I’ve said in the past he’s the best batsman I’ve ever seen…and his feistiness and real aggression towards the opposition has been good, especially when he wasn’t captain, it would bring his team with him,” Healy said.
“They’re more timid than they look the Indians. Kohli’s aggression was good for them, but I think it’s not good for them anymore.”
Kohli was also seen laughing when fast-bowler Ishant Sharma mocked Smith.
“He’s really putting some pressure, you can read pressure all over Ravi Ashwin’s face and he had a crack at Jadeja last night for not picking one up in the field,” Healy said.
“I think there’s massive cracks showing in him, not just the wickets, he’s got to be a bit more respectful of his opponents now I reckon.
“The stuff he did with Steve Smith was unacceptable.”
Former Aussie fast bowler Ryan Harris also took exception to how Kohli behaved whenever India took a wicket.
“He’s charged at the batters,” Harris said on Fox Sports. “That’s unacceptable.”
