Four international captains have got accommodated in the IPL franchise side Chennai Super Kings this season, including New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum. McCullum believes that he has a lot to learn from the sole leader Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has to lead the side. It is his first season with this franchise side.
“At CSK there is only one captain and that is MS Dhoni. He is the one and only decision-maker when it comes to the on-field issues. There is not much team talk about that.” He replied when he was asked about his role to play beside other international captains such as Faf du Plessis of South Africa and Dwayne Bravo of the West Indies.
“However, as old hand captain, we counted upon to do small things off the field like navigating the younger players and looking after the team-mates with things they require abetment with. On the field, there are smaller things like we must not stick around for the skipper to wave his hands at us asking to move a bit closer or further. We should be capable to resolve those things with our experience.” He stated on the official website of the IPL.
Though both of them are batsman turned wicket keeper, but the Kiwi cricketer cleared up that there is not much similarities between these two stalwarts. “Well, there are many things that he and I don’t have in mutual too. But yes, he is a very nice guy, very humble and one of the best skipper across the globe. I am gladdened to have this chance to play under his captaincy since there are many things one can learn from the man.” He said.
Before signing for CSK, he has played for Kolkata Knight Riders where he blew away the RCB with his unconquered 158 in the year 2008.
When he was asked if he would take up the responsibilities of wicket-keeping from Dhoni, he replied, “Oh, no, I am happy to let him do the job behind the wickets. My body is not fit for regular work behind the wickets now. I am glad to be in the same squad as Dhoni, who is a marvelous wicketkeeper. I am the backup option if the team needs one.”
He has been found pretty excited about his reunion with his former teammate and the coach of the Super Kings Stephen Fleming.
“It has been a while since I have been in a squad where Stephen has been present in a leadership role. It’s nice to hear to the old stories once again from him. For me he was the best skipper in the world when I played under him and now, after spending some time with him at the CSK camp, I feel he has become further stronger as a leader and a singleton.” He ended.
