Sri Lanka will be without wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera for the first two ODIs of the upcoming home series against Bangladesh, as the attacking southpaw has been ruled out of action after sustaining a hamstring strain during Wednesday’s warm-up match in Colombo. Sri Lanka’s cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha confirmed the news.

The injury isn’t that serious as Gurusinha states it to be a “very minor” strain in his left thigh. It appears that he may recover to play the second ODI in Dambulla on March 28 but the selectors have chosen to be cautious and keep Kusal in Colombo while the team travels to Dambulla.

The first two games of the three-match ODI series are set to be played in Colombo on Saturday and Tuesday before both teams head to the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo.

A replacement is expected to be named on Thursday or Friday, but Kusal will re-join the squad ahead of the third ODI at the SSC on April 1, provided he recovers as expected. However, as of now, it seems Niroshan Dickwella, who opened in South Africa, will most likely take up that position again.

Perera, who has been out of the ODI setup for sometime now, was in the process of reclaiming his place. He made it to the side again after showing good form against England Lions in the ODI leg after losing his place in the national team for the ODI series against South Africa as a result of poor performances against Zimbabwe last year. He continued to maintain good form after scoring a half-century against Bangladesh in the practice game. But the injury has created a minor roadblock in his way.
