With India’s juggernaut continuing with yet another comprehensive display in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Nagpur, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has lauded the side and said that the current team might be the best side the country has ever produced.
Gavaskar’s comments came after India’s huge win over the Islanders. Bouncing back in style from the two batting collapses in the first Test at the Eden Gardens, India scored a mammoth 610 for six declared after bowling out the visitors for just 205. Skipper Virat Kohli led the way with a monumental 213-run knock while Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma scored fluent centuries.

The onus was then taken by the bowlers to guide the hosts to a big win, and they did it in style, dismissing Dinesh Chandimal & Co. for just 166 runs to fire the world number one Test side to an innings and 239-run win.

Impressed with the clinical performance, Gavaskar not only lauded the team but also backed Virat Kohli & Co. to win the upcoming Test series in South Africa.
“India is firing on all cylinders. It’s batting is looking good. The bowling has got a sharp to edge to it and the fielding is outstanding. I believe India has the potential to win the series for the first time in South Africa. The crucial thing they are peaking at the right time. So I am hopeful that this time India will put one across the Proteas,” Gavaskar told NDTV.
When asked to compare the current side with the Indian teams of the past, Gavaskar refrained from comparing but said the current side might be the best the country has ever produced.
“It is difficult to compare, depends on the opposition, playing conditions. But this is one which is right up there because of the balance they have. This team may be the best India has ever produced,” he opined.

India is yet to lose Test series under Kohli, having won all the eight series and is looking primed to win the ninth. A win in the ongoing series will help India go level with Australia and South Africa who have won most series on the trot.
