West Indies middle-order bat Shimron Hetmyer was on song in the first ODI at Chennai against India as he scored a match-winning knock of 139 runs off just 106 to help the visitors go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Hetmyer batted at the top of his game and brought out his best to score his fifth ODI century. The southpaw connected everything in the middle as he smashed 11 fours and seven sixes.
The left-hander added a 218 runs alliance for the second wicket with Shai Hope, who also scored a fine knock of 102 runs and anchored the run-chase. There was no stopping Hetmyer as he showed no mercy for the Indian bowlers. The 22-year old added that this special ton means a lot to him.
It was a blistering knock from Hetmyer.
It is always a special feeling to get runs in the overseas conditions and it adds a cherry on the cake when those runs help a player’s team in getting over the line.
The last time Hetmyer had scored a hundred in the Indian conditions, his efforts had gone in vain as the Windies had lost the match. Hetmyer was at his best and made the most of the opportunity to help his side win convincingly by eight wickets.
Shimron Hetmyer said while talking in the post-match presentation, “I don’t know from where the power is coming from. I am trying to hit as hard as I can. This ton means a lot to me. The last one I had was at the start of the year and this one came at the end of the year. It is always nice to have a smile on the face after the victory. It’s a good feeling because the last time, I got a hundred in India, we lost the game”.
It was the easiest of pitches to bat on but Shimron Hetmyer made it look like a flat track. He was smoking sixes in his blitz knock of 139 runs. The southpaw had also scored a fine fifty in the first T20I against India.
The left-hander will look to continue his good form going in the three-match series. India and West Indies will take on each other in the second ODI at Visakhapatnam on the 18th of December. It will be a do or die match for the Virat Kohli-led side to stay afloat in the series.
