Former limited-over skipper for Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, Thisara Perera has written a letter to its cricket board; Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) owing to the fall-out on the social media with Lasith Malinga’s wife, Tanya Perera. Thus, he requested the board to intervene in this sensitive matter at the earliest. Perera claimed that he had been often targeted which forced him to write a detailed letter to the Board’s CEO Ashley de Silva.

“When these kinds of accusations are made by the incumbent captain’s wife on social media, it is hard to prevent the general public from believing and further slandering me in various ways,” Perera wrote on his letter accessed by ESPNcricinfo.

The all-rounder Perera bemoaned by saying the Islanders’ team has become the figure of fun following the recent arguments. The 29-year-old Colombo-born Perera raised some pertinent questions after Tanya accused him of meeting the sports minister in a bid to cement his cement in the national fold.

Thisara made it clear by saying the change room atmosphere is not good for youngsters. He added the team can’t play and yield the desired results with such differences taking place.

“We have become the laughing stock of a whole country all because of one person’s personal vendetta. There has been a general sense of unease in the dressing room ever since [the Facebook post] and to be honest the environment was rather unpleasant for the youngsters especially when two senior players were not on the same page. We cannot play as a team with friction,Perera added it his letter.

Apparently, Perera has been targeted by Tanya for trying to make use on influential persons at the behest. However, Perera responded the questions while referring to his exceptional 50-over record in 2018.

In his letter, Thisara has appealed the board to find the solution to pave the way for boosting the morale of the team in particular, and according to him, it will eventually help in bringing calmness within the circles.

“This is not something to be taken lightly, especially at a time like this. I humbly request SLC to intervene. And help us overcome our difference and move forward with a renewed confidence and sense of unity,” it added.

Ahead of the ODIs against New Zealand, the senior bowler in Malinga was handed over the captaincy role for the limited-overs cricket. The SLC’s new selection committee presided by Ashantha de Mel picked Malinga for the role. Perera stated the role of the captain is to create a viable atmosphere in the dressing room. He hinted the Lankan team is in dire need of the leader who is potential enough to guide the team.

“The leadership’s role is to create stability and unity within the team even before one could start with a game plan. In this instant, I regret to say we had none of the above. This team is in dire need of steady leadership and guidance. Importantly, and environment of unity is needed…,” the letter reveals.

Moreover, the visitors received 3-0 drubbing the ODI series against the Black Caps.

Bickering plays a spoilsport ahead of the World Cup: Thisara Perera

Thisara, who played a quintessential role early on for the Lions became a captain in 2017 for the limited-overs. This came when he gave a green signal to fly Pakistan for the short-limited overs series after 2009 gruesome attack.

The prominent Lankan rued over the social media squabbling while remarking the focus should’ve been solely on the upcoming 2019 World Cup. He stated the seniors are bound to step up and set the example to prepare for the quadrennial event.

“We are at the verge of the World Cup. Our focus and attention should be on performing well at it instead of bickering over social media on pointless issues. These issues need rectifying ahead of the World Cup. The leadership and seniors of the team must set the example for this,” it maintained.

So far, Perera has featured in 148 ODIs, 76 T20Is and six Tests for Sri Lanka since 2009. Across formats, Perera bagged 227 scalps.
