Three Indian Players Who Ended Their Teammates’ Careers

In a country of billions where thousands of youngsters work hard day in and day out to realize their dream of representing India, only a handful of them manages to achieve their dream.

Not surprising at all then that that handful of players are required to remain on their toes and perform consistently to retain in the national team.

But such is the demand for a place in the Indian team that even the proven campaigners have lost their places in the playing eleven. Their poor form coincided with other players’ good performances and consequently the former were replaced by the latter.

So here we are looking at 3 Indian players who were replaced by newcomers despite being a big name in the team:

3. Kedar Jadhav and Suresh Raina:

Suresh Raina was an indispensable part of India’s limited-overs team since making his comeback in 2008 but has fallen out of favor at the time. He last played an ODI in October 2015 during the five-match series against South Africa before getting dropped.

He was recalled for the ODI series against New Zealand in October last year but did not play a single game due to illness. The southpaw enjoyed a productive IPL but  Jadhav’s performance has kept him out of the frame. Moreover, Jadhav is also contributing immensely with his part-time bowling and Raina looks set to remain on the sidelines for a good period of time.

2. Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin:

While Harbhajan Singh was the undisputed spin spearhead in India for close to a decade, the meteoric rise of Ravichandran Ashwin has not only made the Punjab-born star fall in the pecking order but the latter has now lost his place in the team too.

Harbhajan last played an ODI for India in October 2015 and his most recent international appearance in any format came over a year ago, against UAE during the 2016 Asia Cup T20.

1. Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan:

Gautam Gambhir’s string of poor performances coincided with Shikhar Dhawan’s brilliant show. Gambhir was dropped after scoring only 251 runs in six innings in the home Test series against England in 2012 which India lost and few months after that Dhawan marked his arrival with a sensational 187 on his debut against Australia.

Gambhir, who had starred in the final of 2011 World Cup and 2007 World T20, was recalled in 2014 and 2016 but his poor performances dashed his hopes of earning a longer rope from the team. Dhawan, on the other hand, has become an indispensable part of the team in all the formats of the game.
