Timeline Of Appointment Of Ravi Shastri As Head Coach

In the end, everything happened as per the script as Ravi Shastri, who was appointed as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team got his own men in the Indian backroom staff and showed that he has been given a free hand by BCCI. No one neither questioned the appointment of Shastri nor asked him how he got his men there.

Shastri’s entry in team India’s backroom staff saw series of unusual events and finally, he made it to the Indian team. Let’s have a look at the timeline of events which took place on Shastri’s way to the post –

BCCI advertises for the post of Head Coach (May 25) – Just a week ahead of the start of ICC Champions Trophy, BCCI advertised for the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team. The move from BCCI came as a big surprise as looking at the performance of team India under Anil Kumble, there was no question about why he shouldn’t have been given an extension but the board termed it as an exercise which is to be followed.

The same day, the first news of a fallout between Kumble and Virat Kohli came out in the public domain.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag applies for the post (June 1) – On the first day of the month of June, former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag applied for the of Head Coach of Indian cricket team. Reports suggested that it was none other than Virat Kohli who asked him to apply for it and Sehwag after showing early reluctance, applied for it. Virat quashes rumours (June 3) – A day ahead of the much-awaited contest against Pakistan, Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, denied rumours of a rift between him and Anil Kumble. Given the circumstances, skipper denying this was inevitable as how he could reveal the details of dressing room ahead of the clash against Pakistan. India lost final against Pakistan (June 18) – It was a dream come true for every cricket lover as India and Pakistan were facing each other in the final of an ICC tournament. Though it was a heartbreak for India as Virat Kohli led side lost the final to Pakistan. It was a big surprise as Pakistan was the weakest team in the tournament but still managed to bamboozle India in the final.

Kumble did not travel to West Indies (June 20) – News came that Anil Kumble did not travel with team India to West Indies due to an ICC meeting. It was reported that he will be joining the team later, after a week. (Read Here: Anil Kumble Didn’t Travel With India Team To West Indies)

Kumble resigns (June 20) – On the eve when news of Kumble not travelling with team India came out, the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team resigned from his post, citing untenable relation with the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Virat puts the matter to an end (June 22) – As soon as team India landed in West Indies for the limited over series, questions regarding Kumble were obvious. Though everything came to an end when the Indian skipper asked to maintain the sanctity of the dressing room.

BCCI extends the deadline to apply for Head Coach Job (June 23) – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took a surprising step. The cutoff date to apply for the post of Head Coach was pushed back to July 9, giving room to other former players to have a go at it. (Read Here: BCCI Extends Date To Apply for Head Coach Job)

Ravi Shastri applies for the job (July 3) – Few days after confirming that he will apply for the post of Head Coach, Ravi Shastri officially sent his CV to BCCI office and became the front runner for the job. (Read Here: Ravi Shastri Applies For Head Coach Job)

The last date to apply for the job (July 9) – It was the last date to apply for the post of Head Coach and the contenders for the job were Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Phil Simmons, Dodda Ganesh, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh, Lance Klusener and Rakesh Sharma.

Though only six of them were interviewed by BCCI’s CAC. Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Phil Simmons, Richard Pybus and Lalchand Rajput were the six men to be interviewed.

CAC buys more time to make a decision (July 10) – The CAC conducted an interview of five of the six candidates for the job with Simmons not available for the interview. Sehwag was the only man to appear for the test in person.

Ravi Shastri appointed as Head Coach (July 11) – Late night at nearly 11 PM, BCCI officially announced Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team. Along with him, Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan were also added to the Indian backroom staff in the role of consultants.

Though a few days later, BCCI came up with a release which stated that both Zaheer and Dravid will be with the Indian team on tour to tour basis. Shastri has the last laugh, gets his core team (July 18)  -In his first meeting with BCCI officials, Shastri had his way as he got his man Bharat Arun as the bowling coach of Indian cricket team.
