The ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2023) saw a bizarre incident where Lyca Kovai Kings’ batter Sujay got run out against Salem Spartans, but the entire incident went unnoticed and he went to slam a crucial 44 runs.
The current Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is doing everything possible to please T20 cricket fans. In addition to the tantalizing fights, the on-field mishaps are getting a lot of attention on social media.
After being asked to bat, Kovai Kings posted 199 for 8 in 20 overs, riding on a super half-century from Ram Arvind and notable contributions from Sujay (44), Atheeq ur Rahman (31), and Sai Sudharsan (41).
Sunny Sandhu was the pick of the Spartan bowlers, returning figures of 3 for 38 while the likes of Abhishek Tanwar (1/53), Sachin Rathi (1/31), and Kaushik Gandhi (1/8) picked up a wicket apiece.
In reply, the Spartans had a torrid start. Chasing 200, they lost their opener Amit Sathvik for a 4-ball duck and no.3 batter Kaushik Gandhi in the next over for run-a-ball 7. The likes of Sandhu (29), Muhammed Adnan Khan (20) and Akash Sumra (20) were top scorers as the majority of the batters scored in single digits.
The Kings’ top wicket-taker, Gowtham Thamarai Kannan, finished with 3 for 20 in 3 overs. Shahrukh Khan, the captain, contributed 2 for 29 while Manimaran Siddharth, Jhatavedh Subramanyan, Valliappan Yudheeswaran, and M. Mohammed each claimed one wicket to dismiss the Spartans for just 120.
Sujay Of Lyca Kovai Kings Gets Run Out, But Goes Unnoticed
Meanwhile, Sujay, who top-scored for Kings, would not have made that many runs, if the umpires or any of the Spartans players had kept their attention on him at the start of the match between the two sides.
Sujay, Kovai’s opener, played the shot at cover point and attempted to take a quick single off Abhishek Tanwar’s delivery. He leaped into the air as the ball was hurled towards him as he approached the non-striker’s end; the ball eventually passed under his knees and struck the stumps.
Sujay was technically out since he had no ground contact inside the crease. There were no requests for a run-out check, though. After the replay was aired on the big screen, the Spartans attempted a referral, but the on-field umpire determined it was too late.
