On 12th of March 2006 at Johannesburg, the hosts had pulled off a sensation win against Australia in the fifth ODI. Thus, they had registered a record-breaking chase to seal the series 3-2.

Earlier, Australia won the toss before becoming the first team to go-past the 400-run tally in the ODI match.

Skipper Ricky Ponting had led from the front by slamming 105-ball 164 on a belter of a surface.

Australia had further set the target of 435. However, in response, the Proteas lost Boeta Dippeaar when the total was three on the board. Yet, Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibble had set the crucial 187-run stand for the second wicket which came off just 127 deliveries.

Following Smith’s wickets, Gibbs had recorded a quickfire partnership alongside AB de Villiers. Gibbs returned to the pavilion after scoring 175 off 111 deliveries.

In between following the dismissal of Justin Kemp and Jacques Kallis, Johan van der Wath had stepped up to slam 18-ball 36.

In between, wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher slammed his half-century with a boundary on the penultimate delivery of the Proteas innings to clinch a high-scoring thriller.
