Surprisingly, in its first fifty years of international cricket, India remained one of the weaker teams in international cricket, winning just 35 of the 196 Test matches they played during this period. However, things have changed since the 1970s with the emergence of superstars like batting legends Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath, all-rounder Kapil Dev and the famous Indian spin quartet – Erapalli Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan (both off spinners), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (leg spinner), and the famous Bishen Singh Bedi (left-arm spinner).

Being the much stronger side at home than abroad earlier, the Indian team improved their overseas record since the begining of the 21st century, winning some thrilling Test matches in Australia, England and South Africa. India have two 50-0vers Cricket World Cup, one won in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev and the second one in 2011 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy.

After winning the 2011 World Cup, India emerged as the third team after West Indies and Australia to win the World Cup more than once, and the first cricket team to win the World Cup at home. With 898 matches in India’s ODI history, they have got 554 ducks.
