Top 5 achievements of Gautam Gambhir’s career

Gautam Gambhir was one of India’s most important players a few years ago. He scored heavily in all the three formats and helped India to reach unprecedented heights in all formats. But a string of poor performances saw him getting dropped from the Indian team in 2014 and ever since he has trying hard to get into the team. And it is quite unfortunate that he has fallen out of favour with the selectors as despite performing consistently he is being ignored for one reason or another. But that does not change the fact that he was one of India’s biggest stars in the last decade and so we are presenting to you 5 of the best moments from Gambhir’s career.

1. 75 in T20 World Cup final, 2007:

There was a lot of pressure on the Indian team when they were playing against their arch rivals Pakistan in the final of the inaugural World T20. Batting first, India started poorly and lost two wickets with only 40 runs on the board. In-form batsman Yuvraj Singh too could not contribute much but Gautam Gambhir held firm from the other side and scored 75 runs off only 54 balls to take India to a respectable total. India won the match by only 5 runs and so it shows how important that knock was.

2. 97 in World Cup final, 2011:

Another big stage and another grand show from the southpaw. Chasing a competitive total of 275 against Sri Lanka, India were in huge trouble after losing Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar with only 31 on the board. A 83 runs partnership between Kohli and Gambhir then steadied the ship but when Kohli was dismissed India still had a long way to go. Bur Gambhir once again took the responsibility and scored 97 runs to take India close to their second World Cup title. The innings was overshadowed by MS Dhoni’s match winning knock of 91 but there is no denying the fact that Gambhir’s innings laid the foundation of the successful chase.

3. 5 consecutive Test centuries:

He played an important role in helping India reach the number one ranking in Tests for the first time in history. He became the first Indian to score five consecutive centuries in Tests when he scored a century against Bangladesh in 2010. His opening partnership with Virender Sehwag gave India numerous good starts and was one of the most important factors of India’s brilliant run in Test cricket.

4. Marathon innings to save the Test against New Zealand

Replying to New Zealand’s mammoth total of 619 runs, India were asked to follow on after being dismissed for only 305 runs in their first innings. The Indian team was looking down the barrel on a swinging pitch only to see Gautam Gambhir play one of the best innings of his career to earn India a memorable draw.  Opening the innings, the southpaw occupied the crease for nearly 160 overs and scored 137 runs  in 643 minutes.

5. Leading Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL glory twice:

Kolkata Knight Riders performed disastrously in the opening three years of the tournament but their fortune completely changed when Gambhir took their charge in 2011. He led the team from the front and helped them to win two IPL titles. He also led them to final of Champions League in 2014.
