Top Five All Rounders In IPL History

The balance that an all-rounder provides to the team is something every team desires for. An individual who can contribute in more than one facet of the game.

Their importance and worth are more important in the shorter format of the game as compared to that of Test Matches. We can see the franchise’s spending huge amount of money on all rounder’s in the cash-rich T20 league’s, such as IPL and BBL.

Rising Pune Supergiant spending INR 14. 5 crores on Ben Stokes during the auction of the tenth season of IPL is a testimony to the fact.

Here we look at the top 5 all rounder’s in the history of Indian Premier League:

5. Irfan Pathan:

He started off his career as a frontline bowler but developed his batting attributes as well with the course of time. During the past season’s of IPL, he had managed to play some handy and crucial innings for the franchise’s he had represented so far.

Irfan Pathan started his IPL career with Kings XI Punjab in the year 2008. He was with the franchise till 2010. In the first three years, he scored 603 runs in 42 outings at an average of 25. 31. Besides, he also managed to pickup 47 wickets with a best of 3-25.

In the following year, he moved to Delhi Daredevils. Although his performance dipped due to the injuries he suffered which also led to a considerable fall in his place, he continued to be a regular member of the squad.

He was very handy for the franchise’s he had played so far for. During his stay in the Daredevils camp, he managed to score 468 runs in 46 matches at an average of 20.54, whereas, with the ball, he managed to pick 29 wickets.

In 2014, he shifted to Sunriser’s Hyderabad where he played only 10 matches, scoring a mere 55 runs and picking up only four wickets.

In the year 2015, he was picked up by the Chennai Super King’s after SRH owners decided not to retain him. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, he only managed to warm the bench, as he did not get a single match to play.

In the year 2016, he was taken by the Rising Pune Supergiant owners after CSK were suspended from the tournament for two years owing to the spot-fixing case. Although he managed to get four games this time under the leadership of MS, he failed to impress with both the bat and the ball.

4. Kieron Pollard:

The man from Trinidad and Tobago has been with the Mumbai Indians team since 2010. Besides, been an aggressive batsman and a slow medium pace bowler he is an excellent fielder who has shown his acrobatics on the field helping to save a lot of runs for his team.

His impressive performance in the Champions League T20 in 2009 and the KFC Big Bash League earned him a place in the MI camp, as he became one of the most sought after players in the IPL.

In his IPL career so far, he has managed to bag 2148 runs at an average of 33.75. With the ball as well he has been impressive, getting 56 wickets with an economy of 8.85, and a career best of 4-44.

Pollard has always been the man who can perform on the bigger stage. 2013 has been his best season in the IPL so far, where he managed to score 420 runs along with picking up 10 wickets which helped Mumbai win the trophy for the first time in IPL history.

His 17 ball 41 in the qualifier and the 18 ball 36 in the final helped Mumbai Indians clinch the trophy for the second time in the year 2015.

There will be a lot of dependence on him in this year’s IPL as well and the team management will turn to him to take the side to a position of dominance.

3. Shane Watson:

He started off his IPL career with the Rajasthan Royals, under the captaincy of Shane Warne. He emerged as the Player of the tournament in the first edition of the game by scoring 472 runs with a best of 76* and also managed to pick up 17 wickets with a best of 3-10 in the 15 matches played.

Watson should be thankful to the inaugural season of the IPL which helped him to make a comeback into the international circuit after been sidelined from the national team pertaining to the injuries.

He was with the Rajasthan franchise till the year 2015, after which the team was suspended for two years from the tournament due to spot-fixing allegations under its name.

‘Watto’ as he is known as is an experienced campaigner both with the bat and the ball. With his attacking batting style, he has the ability to take on any bowling attack. Besides, he is a very useful bowler especially in the death over who has the ability to vary the pace of the ball and provide important breakthrough’s when required. He is also a good athletic on the field capable of saving runs when required.

RCB management will also hope that he brings the same amount of aggression and firepower on the camp which can lead to a change in their fortunes after a poor start to the season.

2. Ravindra Jadeja:

‘Jaddu’ as he is referred to, was initially picked by Rajasthan Royals for the 2008 and 2009 season before shifting to Kochi Tuskers for just a single season in 2011 and eventually being bagged by the Chennai Super Kings in 2012.

In the inaugural season with the Royals, he scored 135 runs in the 14 matches he played and had an important role in the Royal’s victory. He was even better in the following season where he managed to score 295 runs and picked up six wickets from the 13 matches with an economy of 6.47.

In the year 2012, Jadeja was picked by the Chennai Superkings for INR 9.8 crores making him the most expensive player of the season. With Dhoni showing immense faith in him as he managed to become a regular member of the CSK squad.

In his stay with CSK from 2012 to 2015, he managed to score 670 runs at an average of 22.27, and also picked 55 wickets with a best of 5-16.

After CSK was terminated from the IPL due to spot-fixing scandals, he was picked up by the Gujarat Lions in 2016 and continues to be a regular member of the playing eleven. We can only hope that the change in his looks can bring around a change in the fortune for the Lions, as they did not get off to the best of the starts in the current edition of the IPL.

1. Dwayne Bravo:

Bravo brings in the Carribean swag to the IPL. After representing the Mumbai Indians in the first three season he was eventually picked up by Chennai Super Kings in 2011.

He is one of those players who can change the fate of the game single-handedly both with the bat and ball. He was one of the top performing players during the 2012 season by scoring 461 runs, at an average of 57 and also picked up 19 wickets.

He was the highest wicket-taker in the 2013 and 2015 season also, making him the only player to win a purple cap twice.

In his IPL career so far, Bravo has managed to score 1262 runs at an average of 22.94. He has been equally impressive with the ball as well, picking up 122 wickets, with a best of 4-22 and an economy 8.18.

Besides, performing with the bat and ball he is an excellent fielder who has set up high fielding standards not only for himself but also for the team.

Currently, he is with the Gujarat Lions franchise since 2016, although he hasn’t managed to play a single game in the 2017 edition. Because of the injury, he has been ruled out of the season.
