Top 5 batsman at number 6 in Test cricket

In test cricket, number 6 position play an important role. If the team is under pressure, the number 6 batsman can steady the innings and help the team to get out of trouble. Also their role is to protect the tailenders. In modern day cricket, there are few number 6 batsmen who can play this role.

Here we look at the 5 modern day cricketers who are establishing at number 6 in test cricket.

  1. Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow made his test debut against West Indies in 2012. Since then he has played 30 test matches and has been an important member of England test team at the present moment. Jonny Bairstow plays at number 6 and has played crucial knocks for England in recent times. Bairstow has an attacking approach and puts the pressure on the opposition with his stroke play. At number 6 position he has 3 centuries which shows that he could be play important roles. In the recently concluded test series against Sri Lanka, Bairstow scored 387 runs at number 6. The main challenge for him will come when he tours to India and Bangladesh later this year. His best score at number 6 has been 167 not out in 2016 season. Also against Pakistan he has contributed well at number 6 which has helped England to get success.

2. R Ashwin

R Ashwin has the potential of becoming good number 6 batsmen. Since then he has played 34 test matches for India. He made his test debut in 2011 against West Indies. In the ongoing test series against West Indies he has scored 2 centuries at number 6. In the third test, the Indian team were struggling. Ashwin played a brilliant innings of 118 and helped India to score 353. He has changed his technique which has helped him to play well at number 6 position. With tough assignments, at home against New Zealand and England coming up, Ashwin could spot himself to be at number 6 and ahead of Saha. Ashwin has a solid technique. He has four centuries all against West Indies. His highest score in test matches has been 124.

3.  Asad Shafiq

Asad Shafiq, the Pakistan right handed batsmen known for his solid technique is an important player at number 6. He made his test debut against South Africa in 2010. Asad Shafiq makes the bowler bowl to his strength and tires the bowler with his solid technique.  Since then he has played 44 test matches. He can play the big strokes and has played important roles in helping Pakistan win test matches. At number 6 positions he has scored 8 centuries which shows the ability to play long innings at number 6. His top score in test matches has been 137. In the ongoing series against England he has made contributions but need to convert small scores into big ones.

4. Adam Voges

Adam Voges, the veteran number 6 batsmen for Australia is an important member in test matches. He made his test debut against West Indies in 2015. Since then he has played 17 test matches. At number 6 position he has scored important runs and helped Australia win matches in tough situations. At number 6 position, he has made vital contributions for Australia. He has scored 2 double centuries and 3 centuries in that position. In the ongoing series against Sri Lanka he struggled against spin and need to play spin better if he has to stay in team.

5. Dinesh Chandimal

Dinesh Chandimal an aggressive Sri Lankan batsmen has all the makings of becoming a good number 6 batsmen in test matches. He made his debut against South Africa in 2011. Since then he has played 30 test matches. Chandimal has a good technique and can contribute on a regular basis for Sri Lanka in test matches. He has scored 6 centuries in test matches. Dinesh Chandimal has the ability to play match winning knocks for Sri Lanka. In the ongoing series against Australia he has not too much for Sri Lanka.
