The first class cricketer who started his coaching career as in 2001 when he was appointed as Hong Kong national cricket team for 2001 ICC Trophy. In 2003, he was appointed as Kenya cricket coach, but problems between players and cricket board led him to quit the job.

In 2005, he was appointed as Scotland coach; in 2006 he plied his trade in New Zealand where he took a job at Northern Districts.  In November 2008, the New Zealand Cricket Board has appointed him as head coach of the team replacing John Bracewell.

In 2009, he resigned citing problems between him and senior players of the team.

In June 2014, the rising Afghanistan Cricket Team appointed him as batting coach to prepare them for the 2015 World Cup. Just before the World Cup, he has become the head coach of the team replacing Kabir Khan.
