Two weeks have gone by in the World Cup 2015. So far 21 matches have been played and a total of 14 centuries in 11 matches were hit. The highest scorers in an innings have been Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Dilshan, Shikhar Dhawan and Aaron Finch. No one player has scored more than 1 century so far.
Here we look at the top 5 centuries so far in ICC World Cup 2015 –
1. Chris Gayle (West Indies – 215 runs)
Chris Gayle is one of dangerous batsmen when in form. Before coming to this match he was in poor form. Dwayane Smith was out on the second ball and Gayle survived a close LBW shot. He began slowly and then scored his 50 in 65 balls. After that he smashed 100 off 105 balls. He never looked back and scored the first 200 in World Cup history. He scored 150 off 126 and next 12 balls he hit next 50. He hit 10 fours and 16 sixes in that innings and also the leading runs scorer in the tournament so far. He made this score against weak Zimbabwe bowling attack.
2. AB de Villiers (South Africa – 162 runs)
AB de Villiers played one of explosive innings of World Cup 2015. He smashed the West Indies bowlers to all parts off the ground and made sure South Africa reach a huge total that was beyond reach for West Indies. He came in the 30th over when two wickets fell in quick succession. He took time to settle and then after pulverize the West Indies. He hit the fast bowlers down the ground and also hit paddle sweep to fast bowlers. He made 162 runs off 66 balls against West Indies at Sydney on the 27th of February 2015. He hit 17 fours and 8 sixes in his innings.
3. Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka – 161 runs)
Tillakaratne Dilshan, one of the veterans of the team, played another great century for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh at Melbourne on the 26th February 2015. In the beginning he played a little slow and made a very good partnership of 122 runs. He made his fifty off 59 balls. After losing his opening partner, Dilshan and the new man in Sangakkara were at their sublime best. He made his century in 115 balls. In the last 10 overs, Dilshan stepped a gear up and scored 161 runs in 146 balls which ensured Sri Lanka reach a big total of 332 which was enough for Sri Lanka as they won the match by 92 runs. Dilshan hit 22 fours and no sixes in his innings.
4. Shikhar Dhawan (India – 137 runs)
Before coming to this World Cup, Shikhar Dhawan’s form was of great concern. In the match against Pakistan he scored 73 before being run out. Against a tough team like South Africa he came to the occasion and scored a brilliant century. At the start, he was a little cautious after losing Rohit Sharma. He and Virat Kohli made sure that India were never under pressure. He brought up his fifty in 70 balls. After getting to fifty he ensured that he does not waste his chance of scoring a century. He scored his century in 122 balls. Rahane and Shikhar scored at ease which made sure that India reached a competitive total of 307 which India defended successfully. He hit 16 fours and 2 sixes in his innings.
5. Aaron Finch(Australia – 135 runs)
Aaron Finch played this knock against England in the first match of the tournament on the 14th February. He was dropped on 0. At the start when 3 wickets fell, Aaron Finch made sure that Australia did not lose any wickets. He completed his 50 off 42 balls. Aaron Finch and Bailey stitched a 100 runs stand. Finch completed his 100 in 102 balls. After that he attacked the England bowlers and was finally out for 135. He hit 12 fours and 3 sixes. At the end, Australia made a huge score of 342.
