IPL 10: Top 5 IPL Centuries In A Losing Cause!

Hitting a century in a T20 format is not an easy task for cricketers. They require some extra skills and efforts to reach the three-figure mark in this format.

Players like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers are exceptional in this particular format as they love to hit the ball out of the park.

Usually, if a player hits a century in a T20, his team would register a win, but there are some instances when players found themselves unlucky as they ended the game on a losing side.

Today, we are here to open up those 5 pages from the book of IPL where players were unlucky not to be on a winning side even after scoring a memorable ton:

Virat Kohli vs Gujarat Lions in 2016

Virat

9 out of 10 people would go for Virat Kohli if asked about their favourite player of this generation. The man from Delhi loves to play in any of the formats of the game with the same enthusiasm. He had a tremendous IPL season last year where he ended the tournament as a leading run-scorer with 973 runs. The Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper hit four centuries in the season and was the hot favourite to win the title, but David Warner’s side was a bit better on the day of Finals.

Virat Kohli’s one of the four centuries he had in the last season has been named in this list. His 100 off 63 balls against Gujarat Lions was a terrific innings including 11 fours and 1 maximum.

Kohli after winning the toss opted to bat first at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Shane Watson, who opened the batting with him in the absence of Chris Gayle, got out in the 2nd over of the match. The Indian run-machine had a 51-run stand with AB De Villiers before Pravin Tambe removed ABD for 20.

After that, skipper Kohli was joined by KL Rahul and the duo added 121 runs in the next 12 overs. Virat Kohli completed his century on the last ball of the innings by hitting a boundary. On the other hand, the power-packed century went in vain as Gujarat’s Lions were on fire including Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith. They chased down the target with three balls to spare.

Sachin Tendulkar vs Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011

Sachin

It was 15th April 2011 when Mumbai Indians were ready to take on Mahela Jayawardene’s Kochi Tuskers Kerala at their home ground Wankhede Stadium. Kochi opted to bowl first after winning the toss and had plans to get some early wickets. The decision backfired them as the ‘God of Cricket’ was at his best that day. Who would have thought that Master would stay at the crease for 20 overs and make a century? Tendulkar smashed every bowler that comes his way in his own style. The crowd was on their feet when the Indian legend completed his century on the last delivery of the innings.

Most of the cricket lovers had picked Mumbai as the winner after Sachin’s brilliant innings with the bat, but Kochi ambushed Tendulkar’s night as they won the game with an over to spare. Jayawardene played crucial innings of 56 while Brendon McCullum was unstoppable throughout as he made 81.

Andrew Symonds vs Rajasthan Royals in 2008

Symonds

Andrew Symonds is arguably one of the most dangerous limited-overs batsmen one has ever seen. His contribution to his national side has always been terrific, and even in the IPL also, he did not disappoint his team either. Symonds’ magical innings of 117 was one of the best innings of the edition that came against Rajasthan Royals. The right-hander reached his century off just 43 balls and remained unbeaten till the end. Deccan Chargers finished their innings on 214/5 in 20 overs.

It was looking like a formality for the Royals to bat but Yusuf Pathan proved to be a game changer for them. The elder of the Pathan brothers scored a quick-fire 21-ball fifty along with Graeme Smith’s steady 71. Also, Mohammad Kaif’s 34 was a supersonic innings that took the Royals home by 3 wickets with just one ball to spare.

Wriddhiman Saha vs Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014

Saha

Kings XI Punjab had made an exceptional effort in 2014 edition of the IPL after reaching the final. Playing KKR at that stage was not an easy task, but George Bailey’s Punjab plays their heart out that day. Gautam Gambhir won the toss and opted to field first keeping in mind his bowling strengths. Punjab took a significant advantage of their batting with Manan Vohra and Wriddhiman Saha hitting all around the park. Saha had other plans that day as the present Indian Test wicket-keeper hit a solid 115 in just 66 balls. Punjab finished their innings at 199 for 4.

The match was very much open to the side like KKR, but early breakthrough of Gautam Gambhir create enormous tensions in the minds of KKR fans. But it was Manish Pandey who spoiled the Punjabi night by hitting a solid 94 to take his team to another title.

Yusuf Pathan vs Mumbai Indians in 2010

Yusuf

Yusuf Pathan’s monstrous innings of 100 in just 37 balls against Mumbai Indians in 2010 went in vain after Rajasthan Royals were given a target of 213. Royals was off to a disastrous start after losing 4 wickets for just 66 runs in the 10th over. It was then the big man (Pathan) who smashed every bowler out of the park.

He first took 21 balls to reach his fifty and accelerate his innings thereafter by hitting the next 50 runs in just 16 deliveries. Just after he reached his century, he was run-out when the score was 173 in 17 overs. His teammates couldn’t finish things off as Rajasthan lost the game by mere 4 runs. This match was one of the best examples of why cricket is an unpredictable game.
