Stats: Top 5 Leading Wicket Takers In IPL

In T20s the basic key to success lies in strangling down the opposition and making use of the scoreboard pressure while defending any target. While batting first, the motive remains the same, of restricting the opposing side to the lowest total possible.

In order to do so, one doesn’t need rocket science and the key to success is as uncomplicated as it gets. Taking wickets at regular intervals is the basic attribute of success which determines the eventual fate of the bowling side. More often than not, a side which has genuine wicket takers in the ranks will end up on the desired side.

For instance,  the defending IPL champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad were successful in 2016 thanks to the strategy of going for the kill and taking as many wickets as they could. The end result was for all to see as their bowlers turned out to be the eventual difference between them and the other teams.

Considering the sole impact of wickets, we thus, have a look at the top 5 wicket-takers in the Indian Premier League.

  1. Harbhajan Singh – 119 wickets:

Harbhajan has time and again proved his skills as a match winner for the Mumbai Indians and is a champion bowler in the shortest format. With 119 wickets in 125 outings for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Harbhajan has played a far greater role than what the numbers alone suggest.

He has been a great source of inspiration for budding Mumbai players and has easily handled the workload during the middle overs. His economy rate of just 7 is just what the captain needs from his lead spinner as he strangles the batsmen down with his accuracy.

Being the evergreen champion off-spinner he has been over the years, one can expect another strong performance from him this time around as well.

  1. Piyush Chawla – 120 wickets:

Chawla might not have hit an ultimate high in his international career, but as a match winner in the IPL, he has been right in the cream of individuals. Chawla has represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders over the years and with 120 wickets in 123 matches at an economy rate of 7.56.

During Kolkata’s victorious campaign of 2014, Chawla played an integral role as he was constantly among the wickets and successfully gauged the conditions in the middle overs. The Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders would be expecting another good outing from this seasoned campaigner.

  1. Dwayne Bravo – 122 wickets:

An aspect which makes Bravo’s inclusion in this list simply magnificent is that he is an all rounder and not a pure bowler like the other members of this elite list. The Trinidadian is the only individual in the IPL to take over 100 wickets and score over 1000 runs.

While he represented the Chennai Super Kings from 2011 to 2015, he was MS Dhoni’s go-to man at the death. Mixing it up efficiently, Bravo has won the Super Kings numerous games thanks to his perfect death bowling.

Donning the Gujarat Lions colour since 2016, Bravo once again is the go-to bowler for his side during the last few overs. 122 wickets in just 106 games at an economy rate of 8.18 is excellent for someone who does the majority of his bowling at the death.

  1. Amit Mishra – 124 wickets:

By far the most successful spinner in IPL history, Amit Mishra has been a revelation for all the franchises he has played so far. The senior leg spinner has 124 wickets in 112 games while conceding just 7.27 runs per over.

Currently representing the Delhi Daredevils, Mishra has 3 hat-tricks to his name which he took in 2008, 2011 and 2013 respectively. One clear skill which makes Mishra stand out from his contemporaries is his lion-hearted approach and the will to attack no matter what the situation.

Whenever Mishra is flighting the ball, he is in to cause some serious trouble for the batsmen.

Malinga

  1. Lasith Malinga – 143 wickets:

Ruling the roost and the wickets charts in IPL is Lasith Malinga by an absolute mile. The veteran Sri Lankan has 143 wickets to his name in just 98 games, making it 1.46 wickets per match.

A big reason behind the success of Mumbai Indians, Malinga is the greatest death overs bowler of his generation and his accuracy while bowling the yorker or the disguised slower one is top notch.

His absence was dearly felt in 2016 as the Mumbai Indians failed to make it to the playoffs and missed his skills at the death terribly. Now that he is back, and having Mitchell Johnson for a company with the new ball, expect Malinga to be lethal like before once again.
