Top Five Cricketers To Play Most Consecutive ODIs

One-Day Cricket, still hugely respected, termed the real entertainment of game in this T20 era also, is obviously the most demanding format. Cricketers spend years of their life to establish themselves as perfect ODI players. The 50-over format will always guarantee an ultimate test of a cricketer’s true character, fitness and determination and fitness throughout any day battle. We have often witnessed players breaking down during a one-day match, be it played under hot sun or in chilly evenings. The cricketers who manage to surpass through are fit enough to be termed as complete cricketers, this is how challenging and important an ODI cap is.

Here in this article we look into top five cricketers who have played most consecutive One Day International matches.

Richie Richardson – 132

As of now, West Indies legend Richie Richardson has played the fifth most number of consecutive matches in ODI History.

He appeared in 132 consecutive matches between 17 January 1987 and 1 November 1993.

Richie was one of the most stylish batsmen that have ever stepped into the world cricket, and, for a while, he was crowned the best in the world. His fearless batting without a helmet almost throughout his career is still regarded as one of the bravest act in West Indies cricket.

Despite never quite been able to emerge from the enormous shadow of his Antiguan friend, philosopher and guide Viv Richards, he proved to be the most successful West Indian batsman in the late eighties and the early nineties.

Shaun Pollock – 133

Shaun Pollock of South Africa, the brilliant all-rounder and former Proteas captain has played the fourth most number of consecutive ODIs.

He had played 133 consecutive matches between 28 March 2000 and 13 February 2005.

Shaun Pollock is regarded as one of the finest all-rounders in the history of South Africa. Had he made his breakthrough with any other country, the previous statement would have crowned the former SA captain as outstanding, but the significant fact that he pushed his way to sit in the top echelons in the elite class of all-rounders from South Africa — a nation which always gifted with the tradition of giving birth to world-class all-rounders throughout its history — puts Pollock on another plane.
Hansie Cronje – 162

South African cricket’s tragic hero late Hansie Cronje can be found third in the most number of consecutive ODI matches list.

He had played 162 consecutive matches between 4 September 1993 and 27 March 2000.

Cronje was no doubt the face of South African cricket throughout the 1990s. He enjoyed a key role to reinstate South African cricket as a consistent dominating force in world cricket after their much anticipated historic return to international arena.

Known as a complete team man, who many still believe could have done nothing wrong in any day, Cronje shocked the world to leave the game as well as his respectable image as a tainted sports person involved in the infamous match-fixing.

Andy Flower – 172

One of the finest cricketers that Zimbabwe have produced, Andy Flower played the 2nd most number of consecutive ODI matches.

He had played 172 consecutive matches between 23 February 1992 and 11 April 2001.

Andy Flower was undoubtedly the greatest cricketer to come through Zimbabwe’s controversial cricketing history, who demolished almost every opposition, irrespective of the adversity of the conditions.

Despite being a wicketkeeper, and a captain to add, his batting didn’t seem to take any dip throughout his colourful career.
Sachin Tendulkar – 185

And in the history of One Day Internationals, one and only, Sachin Tendulkar tops the chart having played the most number of consecutive matches.

The Master Blaster amazed the whole cricketing world in 185 consecutive matches between 25 April 1990 and 24 April 1998.

Tendulkar being a pioneer in the world of cricket, has been a huge wealth of cricketing asset to the nation where this game is like religion, and rightly considered as the ‘God of Cricket’ in India.

He has inspired so many young cricketers throughout the ages, not only in India, but also from all over the world. His integral part during India’s historical 2011 Cricket World Cup winning adventure will be remembered for long as India had the chance to lift the cup in his hometown, Mumbai.

Sachin is still an inspiration, as modern day cricket still pay tribute to him, be it on or off field.
