Joe Root, on Monday, was announced as the new skipper of England’s Test team as he eclipsed his contenders Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes for the vacant post. Alastair Cook’s resignation as the Test captain kept the English media running for answers for his successor, and finally after much talks and speculations, the Yorkshire batsman was handed the captaincy.
Joe Root, 26, will have to wait for five months to marshal his side in Tests when England will host South Africa in July.
He will, however, be the 80th player ever to captain England in Test cricket. Ben Stokes on the other hand has been assigned as his deputy.
Claiming to have felt ecstatic about this, Root said, ‘It is a huge honour to be given the England Test captaincy. I feel privileged, humbled and very excited‘.
Stuart Broad, who appeared likely to take the baton from Cook early on, congratulated his team-mate for the position, and hoped under his guidance the new England team prospers and achieves more than what is expected from them. Former team-mate Kevin Pietersen too wished Root good luck and then there were few others too as well.
