Incidentally, Ashwin broke Lillee’s record on the same day after 36 years when Lillee scalped his 300th wicket in Test cricket.

In the second session of the day, Ashwin needed one wicket to achieve the record while Sri Lanka just had two wickets in hand. Umesh Yadav gave Sri Lanka a blow when a casual shot from Dinesh Chandimal saw him being dismissed.

After a break of few overs though, Ashwin spun his way to record books when he bowled out Lahiru Gamage and added his name in record books with his record 300th Test wicket.

Talking about Indian bowlers, Anil Kumble was the fastest Indian reach the mark of 300 wickets.

Ashwin also completed his 500 wickets in international cricket today and became the sixth Indian to enter this elite list of bowlers.

Last but not the least, Ashwin is also the quickest Indian bowler to take 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 wickets in Test cricket.

A win on the fourth day of the game added to team India’s joy and now the Virat Kohli led team will be going in the final Test with an eye to keeping Sri Lanka empty handed, just like team India did on their tour to the country early this year.
