Sri Lanka managed to shock hosts England in order to keep their chances alive. The team produced a bowling masterclass in a low scoring thriller.
Having won the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first. However, the team were found in deep trouble when they first two wickets for a score of 3. Both openers were back in the pavilion.
But Ashvika Fernando and Kusal Mendis tried to repair the damage. They put on a 59 run partnership for the third wicket. On the other hand, experienced Angelo Mathews soon joined Kusal Mendis.
They managed a 71 run partnership. However, once Kusal Mendis was dismissed, Sri Lanka could not build the momentum for the final 10 overs. de Silva played a handy knock coming lower down the order.
But Mathews continued batting solely and made an unbeaten 85. Sri Lanka managed a below par 232/9 in their 50 overs at Leeds.
Chasing 233, England openers were dismissed pretty early by Lasith Malinga. But Joe Root and captain Eoin Morgan tried to bring some stability to their chase. Root managed to score yet another fifty in this summer. Once again, Malinga came to strike at key point to dismiss Joe Root.
Sri Lankan bowlers ran rout over English lower order. However, Ben Stokes kept fighting from one end. But he could not get any support from remaining batters towards the end of the innings. The talented all rounder kept on taking the entire responsibility to help England win. He played a special innings but at the end he remained unbeaten with 82.
Lasith Malinga was the man of the match with the ball as he produced a special spell on the day. He was the ultimate difference between the sides.
