Sri Lanka fought back strongly in the 3rd day’s play against India at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi, but at the end of proceedings team India would be happy with their performance in the last session where they bagged five wickets for not many runs. The day began with skipper Dinesh Chandimal and former captain Angelo Mathews carrying on from where they left on Day 2. They looked in sensational touch and was hardly bothered by the Indian bowlers.

Mathews, in particular, got help from the Indian fielders to reach his 9th Test century as he was dropped on three occasions before his century and once after reaching his century. Chandimal on the other hand hardly gave any chances and looked in good touch. He batted all through the day and was the unbeaten batsman along with last man standing Lakshan Sandakan.

Mathews was first dropped by Virat Kohli when he was hardly on 30. On 98 he got a let off from Rohit Sharma, and then Wriddhiman Saha missed a difficult catch. Upon reaching his century, he went for a big hit but mistimed it to the mid off fielder but substitute Vijay Shankar missed the chance. He was eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin as Saha held on to a good catch.

Sadeera Samarawickrama finally came out in the middle at the fall of Mathews’ wicket and played some delightful shots. He was dismissed by Ishant Sharma on 33 as Wriddhiman Saha held on to a stunner behind the stumps. Debutant Roshen Silva had a hard day at the office and couldn’t bother the scorers as Ravichandran Ashwin prized him out with a good delivery.

Niroshan Dickwella couldn’t bother the scorers either as Ashwin hurried him with a quicker delivery and castled him. Wriddhiman Saha yet again showed his skills behind the stumps and jumped towards his left to send back Suranga Lakmal. It was a sensational delivery by Mohammad Shami which zipped away after pitching.

It was Ravindra Jadeja who got the final wicket of the day by wrapping Lahiru Gamage right in front with a quicker delivery. Despite the fall of wickets, Chandimal was a constant for Sri Lanka as he continued his vigilance at the crease. He eventually finished the day unbeaten on 147 which was studded with 18 fours and a six.

Sri Lanka are still 180 runs away and with two days left India will back themselves to complete a 2-0 series victory.
