The fifth and final ODI between India and New Zealand began on a beautiful note as the Indian players wore jerseys with their mothers’ names while taking the field.
Meanwhile, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss for the fourth time in this series and elected to bat first on a pitch that was looking good for batting. However, the Indian openers once again failed to build a strong platform early on as Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed when there were only 40 runs on the board. But then a 79-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli steadied the ship. After Rohit’s dismissal, MS Dhoni joined Kohli in the middle and was finding it tough to time the ball. However, he started to play his shot after settling down and just when the team was heading towards a strong position, Dhoni was dismissed. Manish Pandey followed him soon even without bothering the scorer much. But Virat Kohli held firm from one end and completed his 38th ODI half century and just when he was looking to cut lose, he lost his wicket. The Black Caps continued their disciplined bowling in the last 10 overs as the hosts ended their innings on 269 runs.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the first innings of the series-decider:
