Umar Akmal Dropped, Mohammad Hafeez Included In Pakistan’s Preliminary World Cup Squad
Pakistan have inked on their probable World Cup squad as the selection panel has called up 23 players for a fitness test, on the basis of which the selectors will be announcing the 15-member squad on April 18.
There are a few big names that have been dropped, which includes Umar Akmal and Wahab Riaz.
Akmal had made his comeback to the ODI squad for Australia series but could just score 150 runs.
He could have been in contention for World Cup but he breached the team’s curfew and went to attend a concert. He was also fined for it and this did not help his case as well.
Incidentally, Akmal returned to form in domestic cricket and has scored 235 runs in two innings that he has played after the Australia series.
Mohammed Amir, who has been ineffective in the ODI format for a long now, has been included in the list.
The left-arm pacer has just scalped five wickets since ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
Last year, he was also dropped from the squad for the first time in his career and has become an irregular member of the team now.
The chances of him making it to the World Cup squad are slim, owing to his poor performances.
Mohammad Hafeez has been named in the squad. Selectors would hope that the veteran all-rounder gets fit in time for the World Cup.
He recently underwent two thumb surgeries for an injury that he suffered during PSL.
At one stage, it looked like he won’t be fit for the tournament but his inclusion gives a positive sign.
All the regular players who were rested for Australia have made a return and will have to clear fitness test to be part of the squad.
The winner of 1992 World Cup, Pakistan play Windies on May 31.
Prior to that, they will warm up well for the tournament as they take on England in a limited-overs series in the month of May.
In 2015 World Cup, the Shahid Afridi-led team lost to Australia in the quarter-final stage.
List of players called up for fitness test: Sarfaraz Ahmed, Abid Ali, Asif Ali, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Hassan Ali, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Shoaib Malik, Usman Shinwari, Yasir Shah
