Umesh Yadav Controlled The Ball Longer Than I Did: Herschelle Gibbs
On Wednesday, a controversy sparked midst the first day’s play between India and England at Rajkot, when Umesh Yadav pouched a difficult chance of Joe Root off his own bowling. Though, he could not control himself while taking the catch and it is still a question whether the ball dribbled due to imbalance or whether Yadav himself dropped it.
No matter, it was the third umpire who found the catch to be clean and declared Joe Root out on the basis of emotions shown by Umesh Yadav as he said: “Bowler looks happy, he is out”. However, the decision did not amuse everybody as Nasser Hussain, who was on air at that time commented that Yadav and India were lucky to get away with it.
This catch reminded us of the (in)famous dropped catch by Herschelle Gibbs, who dropped Australian skipper Steve Waugh during the World Cup 1999. According to Waugh, Gibbs dropped the match and not the catch. Realisation of it came after a few days when the knockout game between Australia a South Africa ended in a tie, and it was Australia who marched forward to the next stage by virtue of winning the league stage match. Herschelle Gibbs still remembers that moment very well.
On learning about Yadav’s catch, he commented:
“Mine happened quicker than Yadav’s,” Gibbs said.
So he cleared that his catch was faster than that of Yadav but also gave a clean chit to Yadav as according to him, it was a clean catch and yes, umpire did the right thing by announcing decision in favour of bowler, “There’s not much difference between Yadav’s and my catch, but he held on to the ball slightly longer than I did. He actually had control of the ball and threw it in the air whereas I wanted to throw it up but dropped it. Mine eventuated in a not out, but Yadav’s catch was valid. The umpires got it right both times,” he added.
After having a close look at both the catches, my views are totally different as Gibbs had taken the clean catch and in a hurry to celebrate the moment, he dropped that chance whereas Yadav never ever looked in control of the catch.
